March 18, 2020

To minimize the spread of the COVID-19 virus, the TCSJ building will be closed to the public effective Wednesday, March 18. However, our staff will still be working remotely to provide support via email, phone, and virtual platforms.

For anyone who would like to drop off a timesheet, application, TPA thumb drive, etc., we have a secured drop box located in front of our building at 2721 Transworld Drive, Stockton.

The health and safety of our students, faculty, and staff is our priority. We appreciate your understanding as we take necessary precautions.

March 12, 2020

Dear TCSJ Community,

I understand that many of you are concerned about the current situation with COVID-19. Like many of you, we have been carefully following news about the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19). We are working closely with the San Joaquin County Office of Education (SJCOE), San Joaquin County Public Health Services (SJPHS), the California Department of Public Health (CDPH), and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Although TCSJ will remain open, we will be transitioning to an online, alternative format for all classes held within the building, both Stockton and Ceres campuses, effective Monday, March 16, 2020 until further notice. We will be contacting instructors, support supervisors and administrative coaches with instructions and options for meeting the educational goals of our programs. Please be patient as we work through this and have the chance to contact you with next steps.

This situation is dynamic and rapidly changing, therefore we are taking proactive measures to respond.

The most important way to prevent the spread of viruses at school AND at home is for all of us to be diligent with our own hygiene practices:

Our top priority is the health and safety of our students and staff, and we take this responsibility seriously. We will continue to work closely with health officials to monitor the situation and provide updates as necessary.

Thank you for helping us take every reasonable precaution to keep our campus community safe and healthy.

Sincerely,
Dr. Diane Carnahan
President, Teachers College of San Joaquin

How will I be notified of important college updates during this time?

Important updates will be emailed to your TCSJ email, so please be sure to check your email several times throughout the day. In addition, text messages may be sent out.

IMPACT Intern Teaching Credential Candidates

How can I submit my TPA?

Please drop off your TPA thumb drive to the TCSJ IMPACT Department at 2721 Transworld Drive, Stockton or you can send it via mail to: Teachers College of San Joaquin, ATTN: IMPACT Department, PO BOX 213030, Stockton CA 95213.

TPA Cycle 1 Deadlines

For Year 1 Candidates, the original deadlines to submit CalTPA Cycle 1 were scheduled for April and May. In light of the current shutdown, the TCSJ deadline is being extended to June 18th.

At this time, TCSJ and the Commission do not have the authority to waive any TPA requirements. Decisions related to these items can only be made via legislative action or an Executive Order by the Governor. The Commission is working with the Governor’s Office to discuss possible solutions and we can’t speculate about what they may or may not entail.

At this time, our best guidance is to continue to do what you are able to do!

We are anticipating additional guidance related to the CalTPA (for example, can you use online teaching experiences for the TPA) and we will keep you posted about that.

The next Commission meeting is not scheduled until the end of April and we are anticipating more guidance at that time regarding program-specific flexibility options available to us.

TPA Cycle 2 Deadlines

For Year 2 Candidates, the original deadline to submit CalTPA Cycle 2 was prior to April 1st in order to participate in graduation and to ensure eligibility for an extension for your intern credential. In light of the current shutdown, the TCSJ deadline is currently being extended to May 7th.

TPA Remediation

If you recently received a non-passing score on one of your TPAs, a TCSJ staff member will be contacting you shortly to discuss a remediation plan. Given the social distancing guidelines (6 feet of more), it is likely that remediation will take place over Zoom. In order for that to happen, TCSJ staff must have a copy of your submitted TPA on a flashdrive. If you have not yet submitted your flash drive, please drop it off at the main TCSJ building in Stockton as soon as possible. As of today, March 17th, TCSJ remains open.

RICA

In light of the testing cancellations and limitations related to the COVID-19 pandemic, we are updating our guidance related to participation in graduation and eligibility for credential extensions. As of today, RICA must be taken by May 17th and you must submit proof of RICA registration to your program coordinator and must list TCSJ as your reporting institution.

Please understand that this is a dynamic situation and as we receive new information and guidance this deadline is subject to change.

Support Logs

If you are still providing instruction (even if it is virtually), you should be logging your 5 hours of weekly support on your support log. That support can also be received in a virtual manner.

If you are not currently providing instruction (ie; on break), then you are not required to log hours.

What if the CTC and TCSJ offer a variety of flexibility options and Year 2 Candidates STILL can’t complete all of the requirements this year?

If you are an intern, you will have the option of applying for a 1-year extension and you would be able to complete your requirements in the fall semester. There is still a lot of discussion going on about the details of this, but it is an option.

Please continue to check your TCSJ email for timely updates and important developments. If you have any questions or concerns, please direct them to your Program Coordinator. Although we are all working remotely, we are here to support you.

Residency at TCSJ

Please direct any of your questions to Dr. Karin Compise, Coordinator of Residency at TCSJ at kcompise@sjcoe.net.

Teacher Induction

Individual Learning Plan

Working on your Individual Learning Plan (ILP) will need to be put on hold for now. Kathy is waiting to receive instructions from the Commission on Teacher Credentialing regarding how to proceed. For those of you who are completing induction this year, please don’t worry.

Holistic Ranking of Teaching Practice

Kathy will be sending out instructions to both participating teachers and mentors regarding how to complete the spring Holistic Ranking of teaching practice on the Candidate Competency Record. This task can actually be completed now. The only requirement is that mentors and teachers complete this task together. Kathy will provide possible options and instructions.

Administrative Clear Induction Candidates

Fulfilling CTE Requirements

Fieldwork

Given the fluidity of the current situation, the fieldwork requirements will have to be reassessed in a couple of weeks. It would not hurt to reach out to your fieldwork supervisor to see what the district policy states. If you are able to report to fieldwork, it will be a valuable opportunity to see all that is entailed in shutting down a school.

Professional Development- CTC is aware that conferences have been cancelled for the rest of the semester and that fulfilling the required 20 hours of professional development may be a challenge for candidates. There are some conferences that have transitioned to an online platform which is a viable option. If you are a year one candidate, you are welcome to get caught up on your hours during the summer.

40 hours of face-to-face coaching- There is a great deal of work that goes into closing a school. Lean on your coach via phone, Google hangout, or Zoom for help navigating uncharted waters. You can also continue to work on your Inquiries using the above platforms.

Completion paperwork- If you are completing the program this year, final paperwork is not due until June. With such a fluid situation, we will have to wait and see how schools respond to the progression of this virus. We do have flexibility with the due date if need be.

CalAPA Cycle 3

As of today, March 17th, candidates are still required to complete and pass all three cycles of the CalAPA. Submission dates are flexible and will be revisited once schools are back in session.

EADM386

Given the nature of the class and the fact that we moved to online instruction, Girlie and Danielle will continue to be available to support candidates. Contact us if you would like to set up a Zoom meeting. Since we will not be able to peer review due to the size of the files, you may submit your cycle prior to the due date.

Events

Will the graduation ceremony still be held on June 7?

At this time, our Commencement ceremony on June 7th will be held. However, with changing guidance issued from the California Department of Public Health and San Joaquin County Office of Education, we remain committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of our TCSJ community and will notify eligible graduates if this changes.

Will the TCSJ Teacher and Administrator Job Fair on April 20th be cancelled?

Yes. Due to the current guidelines that state events cannot be held for over 50 people for 8 weeks, we are required to cancel the job fair on April 20th.

Will TCSJ cancel in-person informational meetings?

Yes. At this time, the informational meetings scheduled in-person at the TCSJ campus will move to virtual/online informational meetings. If you signed up for an in-person meeting, you will receive more details about how to attend the virtual meeting.
