Building Curriculum for the 21st Century Learner

This course supports teachers’ development of curricular units that attend to the 21st Century Skills as well as the California Common Core State Standards, Next Generation Science Standards, career pathways, Environmental Principals and Concepts, and/or content frameworks. The participants will develop units of instruction appropriate for use in their classroom.

NOTE: This course is available in the following content and/or focus areas; Social Science, Mathematics, Science, Language Arts, Technology, STEM, Environmental Literacy, Special Education, Career Technical Education (CTE).

Student Learning Outcomes

  • Develop integrated units of instruction aligned to the CCCSS and/or NGSS
  • Embed 21st Century Learning within curriculum design
  • Identify assessment points and create summative and formative assessments along with rubrics for scoring

Course Assignments

Curriculum Units – Each unit will be submitted in a format that will provide all needed support and documents so that a colleague could use it without confusion or questions. All objectives, standards, lesson plans and assessments (along with rubrics for scoring) will be included. Tips for implementation and lists of materials are also included in final project. The number of units offered are dependent on the robustness of the unit:

1 Unit

3 - 5 weeks of lesson plans and all other components included.

2 Units

6 – 10 weeks of lesson plans and all other components included.

3 Units

11+ weeks of lesson plans with all other components included.

4 Units

One semester of plans with all components included

Units offered could also be comprised of combinations of the above options.

Evaluation Criteria for Credit

All components must be present, explanations provided are clear; reader will be clear on objectives, standards, lesson plans, assessments, practical tips for implementation and needed materials.
