Adding a Credential Or Subject Area to a Valid CA Teaching Credential

Teachers College of San Joaquin provides the opportunity for a holder of a valid CA teaching credential to add a credential or subject area to their existing credential.

Education Code section 44225(e) and Title 5, California Code of Regulations, section 80499 allow a teacher to obtain an additional general education teaching credential without completing the full professional preparation program for that credential. Qualified applicants may obtain an additional credential, either multiple subject or single subject, or add an additional single subject content area, when they satisfy requirements listed in CTC Document CL-621A.

Teachers College of San Joaquin (TCSJ) provides the opportunity to complete the following requirements listed within CL-621A:


To add a multiple subject credential to a valid CA single subject credential:

  • A three-semester-unit or four-quarter-unit course in methodology directly related to teaching in a departmentalized setting in the specific content area sought
  • Course work in developing English language skills, including reading

To add a single subject credential to a valid CA multiple subject credential:

  • A three-semester-unit or four-quarter-unit course in methodology directly related to teaching in a departmentalized setting in the specific content area sought.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Possess a valid CA preliminary or clear single or multiple subject credential
  • Subject Matter Competence (CSET or Subject matter verification waiver)

Application Deadlines:

  • October 15 (to begin in spring 2022)

2021 Cost:

  • $350 per unit (until May 31, 2022)

If you would like to add a special education teaching credential to a valid general education teaching credential, you are required to complete a full professional preparation program for that credential. Learn about TCSJ’s IMPACT Intern Preliminary Teaching Credential Program where you can earn the credential while you are working as a Special Education teacher. (Pre-Service Preparation is not required if you already hold a valid teaching credential.)

Once we receive your complete application, our admissions department will process your application and an advisor will review your transcripts to determine what coursework and requirements you need to complete to add the credential you are seeking.

If you would like to add a single or multiple subject teaching credential to a valid education specialist teaching credential, you are required to complete a full professional preparation program for that credential.
